Ten Things That Move Your House Within the Range

Linear footage and storeys

Eavestroughs are measured along the eaves, so the total run length is the starting point. Height matters almost as much: a bungalow can be worked from ladders, while a two-storey or a walkout with a tall back elevation needs longer ladders, more set-ups and more time for every foot.

5-inch or 6-inch profile

Standard 5-inch K-style suits most Airdrie houses. A 6-inch trough carries significantly more water, roughly 40 percent more, and it uses more coil per foot and pairs with larger 3x4-inch downspouts. It is worth it on big roof areas, steep pitches and valleys that dump into one spot, and wasted where a 5-inch system copes.

Coil thickness

.027" aluminum coil is the common residential standard. Heavy-gauge .032" coil costs more, and it resists hail dents, ladder damage and snow load noticeably better. In the Calgary to Airdrie hail corridor, the heavier coil is worth considering on any replacement after a storm.

Corners, mitres and downspouts

A plain rectangle with four corners is quicker than a house with bump-outs, bay windows and garage returns. Every inside or outside mitre, end cap and outlet is a joint to form and seal, and every downspout adds elbows, straps and an extension or splash pad at the bottom.

Material: aluminum, steel or copper

Prefinished aluminum is the everyday choice. Painted steel is stiffer. Copper costs considerably more in material and labour, needs soldered seams on half-round profiles, and must be kept away from aluminum and galvanized steel with compatible hangers and fasteners.

Gutter guards

Guards are priced by the foot on top of the trough. Stainless micro-mesh stops fine needles, seeds and shingle granules; perforated aluminum covers are stiffer against hail and ladders but let fine grit through. Neither stops snow and ice sitting on top in winter.

Soffit, fascia capping and drip edge

Roof-edge trim is priced by the length of eave it covers. Vented soffit costs about the same to hang as solid, but it only helps if the attic side is open, so we check that first. Fascia capping is bent on site to fit each board, and retrofitting drip edge under existing shingles takes more care, ideally in warmer weather so the shingles don't crack.

Soffit and fascia rot repair

Hanger screws need solid wood, and capping over a soft board only hides the rot. Where fascia boards, sub-fascia, soffit boards or rafter tails have rotted, they are replaced before new trim or troughs go on. How much rot there is often only becomes clear once the old eavestrough comes down.

Access and roof pitch

Steep roofs, tight side yards between houses, decks and landscaping under the eaves, and commercial or multi-family buildings that need a lift all add set-up time and equipment. A walkout lot where one side of the house is three storeys tall is a different job from a flat lot.

Removal and disposal

Taking down old troughs, downspouts, spike-and-ferrule fasteners and damaged soffit panels, and hauling them away, is part of most replacement jobs. After hail it can be a large share of the work, especially where cracked vinyl soffit has to come out as well.

  • Lot grading, landscaping, weeping tile and storm or sanitary sewer work
  • Rot repair beyond what the written scope names, if more is found once the old eavestrough is removed
  • Siding repairs and painting, and any insurance claim decisions, which belong to the insurer and adjuster

Comparing Eavestrough Quotes Fairly

Two quotes for the same house can differ a lot and both be honest. Check whether each one names the profile and size, the coil thickness, the hanger type and spacing, and the number of downspouts. A lower price with hangers every couple of feet and .027" coil is not the same job as one with hidden hangers 12 to 18 inches apart and .032" coil, and around Airdrie the difference shows up in the first winter of ice or the first hailstorm.

Then look at the ends of the system. Does the quote say where each downspout will discharge, and what carries the water away from the foundation? Does it include removing the old troughs and checking the fascia behind them? For guards, compare the type of guard as well as the length; for drip edge and soffit, check whether vented panels and a retrofit under the shingles are named. And check whether the total is before or after GST.

Pricing Questions

Why is the price range so wide?
Because the same length of eaves can be a very different job. A house lands near the bottom of a range when it is a bungalow or a simple two-storey with four corners, sound fascia, a flat lot and room for a ladder on every side. It lands near the top with a walkout back elevation, bump-outs and bay windows that add mitres, an upper roof draining onto a lower one, tight side yards, decks under the eaves, or soft fascia that has to be replaced before anything can be fastened. The written quote after measuring puts your house at a point in the range and says why.
Do these prices include GST?
No. Every range on this page is before GST, which is added at 5 percent on the written quote. The ranges are typical installed prices for the Airdrie area, updated September 2026. The price you pay is the one on your written quote, set after we have measured the house.
Is heavy-gauge .032" coil worth paying for?
Often, around Airdrie. The standard .027" coil does the job on plenty of houses, but .032" resists hail dents, ladder damage and snow load noticeably better, and this corridor sees a lot of hail. On a typical house the difference is a dollar or three a foot. If your eavestroughs are being replaced after a storm, or the house sits exposed on open ground, the heavier coil is usually the sensible choice. On a sheltered bungalow with a small roof, the standard coil may be all you need.
Can I keep the cost down by repairing instead of replacing?
Sometimes, and we will tell you when. A system with sound troughs, good slope and solid fascia that only leaks at a few corners usually just needs those joints stripped and re-sealed. Replacement makes more sense when the troughs are badly dented, the slope is wrong along whole runs, the fastening has failed in many places, or the system is too small for the roof. Paying for repeated repairs on a system that cannot drain properly costs more in the end.
