Why Airdrie Is Hard on Eavestroughs
A gutter system that would last for decades somewhere mild gets tested here by three things at once: hail in summer, ice in winter, and ground that will not take the water away. Every specification we recommend comes back to one of them.
Hail
On 13 June 2020 a hailstorm hit northeast Calgary, Airdrie and Rocky View County hardest, leaving more than a billion dollars in insured damage. At the time it was the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history. The corridor between Calgary and Airdrie is one of the most hail-prone parts of the country, and hail season runs roughly June to August. Dented troughs hold water, crushed downspouts stop draining, and heavier coil holds up better.

Chinook winds bring mid-winter thaws followed by hard refreezes, and that cycle happens more times per winter here than in most Canadian cities. Each thaw sends meltwater into the eavestrough; each refreeze turns it to ice. Troughs with poor slope, loose hangers or plugged outlets fill with ice and pull away from the fascia, while heat escaping into the attic builds ice dams above them.

The eavestrough problems on a street depend a lot on when it was built. Airdrie’s older homes in Hillcrest, Big Springs and Old Town tend to have original fascia, older fastening and mature trees. Woodside and Fairways grew around the golf course through the 1990s and 2000s, and their sealant and hangers are commonly showing their age.
