Commercial and industrial buildings dominate the Balzac skyline. Many large warehouses drain their main roofs through internal drains or scuppers, but the lower canopies, loading-dock overhangs, office fronts and shop-condo bays along the edges usually rely on exterior eavestroughs and downspouts. Those runs are long and take roof water from a big area, so a standard 5-inch residential trough on a 2x3 downspout is simply undersized. The results show up as overflow over entrances and dock doors, ice building on walkways in winter, and downspouts crushed by forklifts or delivery trucks. For these buildings we install 6-inch or larger seamless profiles, 3x4 or larger downspouts with protective guarding near traffic, and work from a lift around operating hours.

Around the commercial core, Balzac's older hamlet homes and the country residential acreages spread across the surrounding land are a very different stock. Acreage houses are commonly larger bungalows and two-storeys on big lots, with attached triple garages and detached shops, barns or equipment sheds. These buildings were often finished at different times by different trades, so the house might have seamless aluminum eavestroughs while the shop has sectional troughs, no downspout extensions at all, or nothing on its eaves. Shelterbelts of spruce and poplar planted around yards drop needles and leaves into gutters that nobody gets to on a ladder very often.

Steel-roofed shops and outbuildings are common on Balzac acreages and small commercial lots, and they need a different approach than shingled roofs. Snow on a steel roof sits until the sun or a chinook loosens it, then comes off all at once and can rip off a trough mounted in its path. On those buildings we either set the eavestrough low enough to sit below the slide path, recommend snow guards so the roof sheds gradually, or leave the eave open and manage the water at grade with splash pads. We would rather tell you an eavestrough won't last on a particular steel roof than install one that ends up in the yard the first winter.
